Every Year I am asked “What are the Trends?"
Here is the latest news on Christmas Decorating for 2009
Before I share with you the forecasts of Colour Analysts and Designers, I would like to share with you my personal thoughts!!!
Christmas is a tradition going back centuries to pagan times. It has always been celebrated with evergreens, pine cones, berries, hand made ornaments, candles, trees, puddings, cakes, cookies, etc. and wonderful music. (If you love traditional Christmas music you may want to check out our CD at the start - it was taped at our Church and features wonderful bell choirs, instrumentalists, vocalists, etc.
Trends come and go but the basic traditions will always be in style - particularly now as we shift back to nature and more earthy and eco friendly decorations.
This year we have tried to come back to this style of decorating and as time goes on we will endeavour to find more and more natural decorations. Look for lots of greenery, cones, birch, and of course traditional rich reds and greens - so don’t discard your traditional decorations - most of the colours etc. this year blend with tradition - just add a couple of new items and you will sparkle!!!
So here goes with the 2009 trends!!!! - with a Snowman Factory Twist!!!!
1. Earthy
Consisting of Layered Greens, branches, nests, pods, seeds and “Found Objects” Pine Cones, botanicals, birds, berries, fruits, etc. (These will blend beautifully with many of last years rich, earthy colours!)
2. Shimmer
This is a quieter, soft, wintry style (parts of which can be left out all winter) - matte and shiny ornaments combined, champagne, winter white, soft gold and silver, delicate feathers, whimsical fairies, textured fabrics, soft glittery poinsetias and branches, sage green, pearlescent and opalescent reflecting light. (These, too, go with many of last years colours)
3. Silhouette
Both in objects’ shapes and printed designs applied to fabrics- red and white, black and gold, flocking, snowflakes, icicles, balls, words that capture the season. These ideas are georgeous in table runners, cloths, window adornments, etc
4. Metal
This palette crosses from the “Shimmer” look to richer and more opulent combinations of metallics which can be layered in branches, ornaments, cones etc. Gold is once again surpassing silver in popularity (I still love silver!!!!) Metallic tends to create a cleaner look - metal dipped branches, feathers, florals, stars. Look for pewter, gunmetal, platinum and mirrored finishes
5. Whimsy
There is a feeling that older, more traditional styles of ornaments such as Santas, Fairies, Snowmen, Elves, Bottle Brush Trees, Traditional Glass, Figures under glass, etc have become much stronger this year due to all the insecurities in the world right now. We tend to agree - though these are items that have always been popular at The Snowman Factory - did I also mention Teddy Bears - wait till you see!!!
Basically the colours this year are not that different - browns and earth tones, red and green, gold and ivory, gold and silver, and winter white!!!
